LimSee3 Walkthrough

Initial screen

In this first section, we describe what happens when LimSee3 is launched and we present the main areas of the initial screen.

When you start LimSee3 (see the Running how-to for details), a small splash-screen appears to let you know that the process has begun. While the splash screen is visible, diverse initializations take place, the user interface is built and a new session is created.

At some point, the actual LimSee3 interface appears under the splash-screen and -a few moments later- the splash-screen disappears. The application is up and running.

Do not be surprised if your actual LimSee3 window is somewhat different - the actual dimensions, proportions, character fonts etc. depend on your screen size and on your platform.

Main interface elements

There are several distinct areas in the application window, as presented on the following figure:

In the sequel, we will briefly present each of those areas: menu bar, main tool bar, document, library and tool areas, generic tool buttons and console.

Menu bar

The menu bar is composed of three different menus:

Tool bar

Below the menu bar, you can find the tool bar. On fig. 5, tool buttons are presented on two lines, but the exact layout can differ on your screen. The tool bar contains several text-editing buttons (copy-cut-paste, text alignment, font variations, color palette), the undo-redo buttons and (on the second line) several more specific buttons, which apply on the Welcome document.

Document area

The welcome message appears in the main area, called document area. As a matter of fact, the welcome message is a LimSee3 document - you can see the name of the corresponding file (start-screen.xld) in the upper-left corner of the area.

In later sections, we will illustrate some basic document manipulations on the welcome document.

Library area

To the left of documents, you can find a narrow library area. In fact, the area is currently minimized (we will see later what it means) and this is why it is represented only by a simple Libraries tab.

Tool area

Right of documents are tools - at least, this is the area where they would be, if any any of them were active.

Tool activation buttons

Close to the tool area are located several buttons. Their role is to activate or deactivate tools, as you need them.

Console area

Like the library area, the application console is minimized - only the corresponding tab is visible at the bottom of the LimSee3 window.

In the next section, we present some basic document autoring features.
