The initial installation

In this section we describe the installation procedure of LimSee3. It consists in seven major steps:

  1. Installer launching
  2. Selecting a language
  3. Selecting a folder
  4. Automated pre-installation
  5. Selecting a version
  6. Automated installation
  7. End

Launching the installer

To create a new LimSee3 installation on your system, a web-based installer is provided. It is publically accessible at this address: The installer uses the Java Web Start technology (which is a part of Java) to execute directly from a web browser.

A click on the above link activates Java Web Start, which downloads a few files (approx. 900 kb) and issues the following warning:

Do you want to run the application?
Fig. 1 - Security warning

This is normal: the LimSee3 installer will need access to your hard drive, so it can actually install the application. In its security warning, Java Web Start asks you to grant such a permission (by clicking on Run) or to abandon the installation.

Click on Run.

Selecting a language

After you allow the installer to be executed, the installation procedure begins. As a first step, you are prompted to choose the language to use during the installation procedure. It will also be the default language of you LimSee3 installation.

Selecting the installation folder

Next, you are prompted to choose the folder into which LimSee3 should be installed:

The installer provides you with a default folder into which LimSee3 can be installed. It is just a suggestion: you can actually install the application anywhere on your computer, provided that you have the rights to write there. Feel free to select any location that is comfortable for you.

Notice that a "limsee3" sub-folder will be created in the folder you select and that the whole application will be installed into it. (Thus, on our example, LimSee3 would go to C:\Documents and Settings\John\limsee3.)

Automated steps to install a starter package

Once the installation folder is chosen, the installer executes several automated (and rather fast) steps. You can follow the progress on the screen: the currently executed step is pointed by an arrow current; the already executed ones show their final status (OK for successful completion, ! for completion with minor errors and !! for unrecoverable error).

In a nutshell, during this phase the installer creates the limsee3 folder with several sub-folders, downloads some necessary files and installs a starter package for LimSee3. Then, it looks up for available versions on the Internet.

Selection of the version to install

In the next step, you are prompted to select the version to install. By default, the latest version is proposed, but you can choose to install an older one.

It is a good idea to install the latest available version.

Automated steps to install the main system

After you select a version, the main files are downloaded and installed in a fully automated way.

It is possible that during this phase, Java Web Start issues another security warning:

Do you want to run the application?

If this is the case, simply allow (Yes) the publisher.

End of installation

When the installation procedure ends, a short summary is displayed.
